Synesthete Spies, Detectives and Outlaws: unsettling truths uncovered through (an equally unsettling) synesthetic process - An article by Patricia Lynne Duffy

Abstract

“Synesthetes, Spies, Detectives, and Outlaws: unsettling truths uncovered through (an equally unsettling) synesthetic process” focuses on portrayals of fictional characters with neurological synesthesia in seven selected 20th and 21st century English-language novels in the detective-spy genre. Characters are discussed in terms of the five categories of literacy depiction of synesthete characters as outlined in the chapter, “Synesthesia and Literature” in the Oxford Handbook of Synesthesia (Oxford University Press, 2013). I will suggest that depictions of synesthete characters in the detective genre link synesthetic perceptions with glimpses of ultimate truth, and trace these tendencies back to descriptions of synesthesia in 19th century seminal European works (written during a very fertile period of research into audition colorée), including Arthur Rimbaud’s "Letter of a Seer" and Max Nordau’s Degeneration.

The 12th National American Synesthesia Association, Inc. conference will be hosted at Harvard on October 6 – 8 by Dr. Takao Hensch, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biology and Professor of Neurology, and made possible by the Board Members of the ASA, Greta Berman, Edward M. Hubbard, Daphne Maurer, Lawrence E. Marks, and Carol Steen. 

The Board Members of the ASA invite the submission of abstracts from individuals wishing to make a presentation on any of the following: a scholarly paper, a discussion of creative aspects of synesthesia, a reading, a presentation of visual artwork, audio compositions, or video presentations. If you are interested in being considered for a presentation, please submit an abstract, no longer than 250 words. 

Please include your name, e-mail address, telephone contact number, and a short resume (no more than two pages) or web-link to same. The number of presentation slots will be limited, so there is no guarantee that a submission can be accepted. Individuals are urged to attend even if they do not intend to make a presentation.  

Please also list any audio/visual equipment, including podium and microphone, you might need for your presentation. Please plan to limit your presentation to 20 minutes (not including an additional 5 minutes for Questions & Answers) in length.  

Our abstract review board is representative of the diverse interests, talents, and approaches to exploring and experiencing synesthesia. It includes artists, linguists, historians, and scientists, some of whom are synesthetes themselves. 

DEADLINE for Abstract Submission: July 7, 2017.  

NOTIFICATION will be on or before July 25, 2017

Introduction: CCTV News network team were at Beijing No.24 Middle School on May 31^st 2017 for the program “visiting the school closed to your home”, where new courses were introduced with excellent examples in education. Vice director of Education Committee Ms. YOU Na, President of No. 24 Middle School Mr. Niu Xiao Hua entered Art Synaesthesia Classroom with CCTV Journalist. This project has been developed jointly by teacher Ms. JIANG Xin, LIU Liyun, XU Qing and ZHANG Na with Mr. Ninghui XIONG, the father of one student. What demonstrated here were the artworks of the students inspired and created after recent activity for “travel learning” by school, including poetry, painting and music combination in a culture tradition way in China, where synaesthesia concept had been introduced.

Following the theory and supported by Ninghui, the project team created a new way of education from single discipline category mode to interdisciplinary mode to combine literature, art and music together. For those students after training, their performance in “activity of travel learning to the south cities”, has demonstrated excellent result in creative sense, smart learning and good memory as an achievement shown here during CCTV interview program.

The Artecitta Foundation has begun planning its 6th international Conference on Synaesthesia Art and Science.

 Dr Timothy B Layden, Christine Söffing and  Klaus Schmidtke

Christine Söffing and Timothy B Layden both have sound to shape synaesthesia and have done comparative experiments using specific sound stimuli to create drawings of the shapes they see with these sounds. Their initial results revealed strong correspondences, which peeked their interest and brought forth further questions. To answer some of these questions they broadened their experiments of sound drawing to a wider group, including other synaesthetes, artists, musicians and adolescents. This on going research will continue through investigation involving attendees to the V Congress on synaesthesia, science and art taking place in Spain, May 2015. The results of their experiments will be compared with previous research to find further correspondences and other interesting findings. Their results are presented in relation to their own synaesthetic experiences of sound and how it is used in their art practices. The questions around the synaesthetic experience of the shape of sounds and the results of Söffing, Layden and Schmidkte's initial experiments are described within this paper, opening doors for further discussion and questions around this subject.
